Amongst the compression formats, zip is the most popular one (42%), with 7z the next in sequence (23%) for Windows; gz is the most popular one for Linux (18%)

Concluding that if a virtual appliance is packaged in zip format it is intended for Windows is very odd. Zip is the format to use if you want to distribute in a way that works cross platform without having to add additional tools. It works on Windows, Mac OS X and is rarely a problem on modern Linux distributions. Ironically, Windows Vista has more problems with Zip files then any other platform.
